For those of you who have never heard of Not On My Campus, it is a student-led organization aiming to educate and inform people about consent and end sexual assault on college campuses. In a culture where sexual assault is so common, especially at the collegiate level, it’s important for people to know what is acceptable and what they can do to help STOP rape culture. A sad fact is that 9 out of 10 sexual assault victims on college campuses will know their offender. We want to change these statistics and make people more aware so that sexual assault can start to become a thing of the past. It seems like a big goal, but change starts with just a few people.
My name is Devin Teicher and I was inspired to start a Texas Tech chapter of Not On My Campus after seeing the success that UT Austin had with their own campaign. I was touched and amazed to see athletes, professors, and even the Dean of the university standing up for change at UT. And then I thought to myself-why couldn’t it happen here at Tech, too? I rounded up some friends that were passionate about changing rape culture and ending sexual assault and we got to work on starting up a Tech chapter. A few weeks later, we were approved as a student organization! Being a registered student organization is just the beginning. For us, this semester will be full of tabling at student organizations fairs, in the free speech area, and hosting events to get people informed. '
However, we can’t do it alone, and having just one person take the pledge is one more person committed to changing things. I urge you to take the pledge and become more involved in making an active change here at Texas Tech. If you are interested at all in being a part of Not On My Campus, we will be kicking things off in the fall and would love as many members as possible. You can contact us and we would be more than happy to add you to the email list and send you information on meetings as well as organization updates.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to those of you who have taken the time to sign the pledge and read the blog. You are taking a step towards change.
